What is the ‘Role Model’ program?

The Role Model talent management program includes a comprehensive suite of services to help you recruit and develop high-performing employees.

At the heart of the program is a template of ‘Role Model’ competency and capability, based on evaluations of the current team or the most successful employees across other organizations in your industry. Each template is created from the results of work-related tests, questionnaires, and other assessment methods.

Once created, this same assessment program can be used to compare job candidates and current staff to Role Models, using a specific range of scores and qualities to highlight their strengths and opportunities. The template also includes targeted development resources and a list of specific behaviors that employees can practice to reach the same level of performance.

Most importantly, these qualities are based not on what seems critical to success, but what has been proven through objective measures of top talent.

Role Models in Healthcare

A Role Model template was created for Foothills Medical Centre, one of the largest hospitals in Canada, to understand what it takes to be successful as a Medical and Health Services Manager. Assessments of ‘Role Model’ leaders revealed a number of abilities and behaviours that were keys to success in this specific role, within this particular organization - all of which were verified through participant debriefs and discussion with managers and executives, including:


Verbal Communication

Speaking clearly, concisely, and directly. Tailoring your message to your audience, and ensuring others understand and agree.


Expressing care and compassion for staff, patients, and their families. Following-up. Encouraging people to come to you with problems, even if not related to work. Listening to them and empathizing.


Being visible and accessible, and fostering an “open door” policy. Interacting regularly with patients, families, staff and physicians. Attending events.

Improvement Orientation

Supporting change and innovation. Coming up with ideas to improve unit performance and efficiency, and patient care. At the same time, focusing on ideas that are practical and realistic. Practicing quality and process improvement.


Seeking out opportunities to collaborate with patients, families, staff, physicians, and other teams. Checking in with them regularly. Treating them like partners and trying to find solutions that meet everyone’s needs.

Work Ethic

Being persistent and working hard to get things done. Making sure you understand goals, and completing tasks to expectations. Finding ways to motivate yourself and persist through obstacles.


Staying calm and keeping your emotions in check, but taking problems seriously. Considering issues from an objective, balanced standpoint.

Role Model Template

A Role Model Template is created based on assessments of current team members, highlighting attributes shared by those who perform particularly well in the position.

All evaluations include a standard set of work-related assessments of ability, motivation and behaviour. A unique 360° feedback survey platform called ProDev360 is also used to identify Role Models and explore their typical approach to managing people and problems.

In addition to the template, current team members are provided with a report on their results and access to their online ProDev360 dashboard, which provides them with details on their strengths, opportunities, developmental suggestions, and progress over time. Participant debriefs and other supporting services may be added to the program, as described below.

When available, a Master Role Model template for the target position will be provided, which summarizes results for high-performers across other organizations in your industry.
